Why Drawing and Coloring Matter in the Early Years

Between ages 2 and 4, children learn how their hand movements create marks on paper and gradually gain more control over direction, shape, and movement.

Turning Marks Into Meaning
As children grow, they start to give meaning to their drawings. They use pictures to represent familiar objects and ideas.

Building Fine-Motor Skills
Drawing and coloring help children coordinate what they see with how they move their hands. These visual-motor and fine-motor skills also support abilities used in drawing shapes and early writing.

Freedom to Experiment
At this age, coloring inside the lines is not the goal. Scribbles, large strokes, unusual colors, unfinished pictures, and marks outside the outline are all a normal part of learning.
